Learn how to index your own book

Here’s a link to a free webinar I just presented on how to index a book in Word. It’s not difficult, it just takes a willingness to learn and a bit of concentration! The result will be a book that is more valuable and useful to readers – possibly resulting in more sales and more great reviews.

Good book ideas | How to decide which book to write next

Help! I want to write but don’t know where to start

I hear you! I’ve been a writer for many years but I have so many ideas but I often don’t know which to work on first. Plus there’s the old problem about finding the time, making loved ones understand that you need some quiet, finding motivation when tackling a long book, etc.

I got published initially by doing a fabulous course called ‘Publish Your Book On Kindle‘, which helped me navigate both the writing and publishing process. It also included helpful marketing advice. Not cheap – $199 – but a worthwhile investment if you’re serious about making a living from writing.

The author of the ‘Publish Your Book On Kindle’ course has also created a free course on how to write, which is wonderful. It’s called ‘Becoming A Writer‘ and contains lots of exercises to get the creativity flowing.

Another free course, ‘Memoir Kickstart‘, would be great to join if you fancy having a go at memoir writing.

Finally, if you’re really stuck try journalling. Write down your daily activities and what you felt about them. It is a lovely way to end the day and start thinking about the next one – and it can get the writing bug going.

Author Beware

Nancy used to be a traditionally-published author. She had a good publishing deal and numerous books on the market but she decided to pull out of it and publish new books herself. Why? Because publishers don’t do much – or any – marketing for their non-celebrity authors. You can do a lot better if you do it yourself and you’ll be making much better royalties.

So do you need one of the new publishing packages, where a company will format your book, get the cover sorted out, upload it to Amazon, etc?

No. You don’t need to feel embarrassed if you have bought a package. They CAN be very good. However, they can be big rip-offs too. If you have been caught out, chalk it up to experience and do things differently next time. In the meantime, get going on your next book!

If you haven’t published yet, do bear in mind that you can learn how to do it all yourself either without cost or very inexpensively. That’s if you have the time, of course. You may decide to go the paid route if you don’t.

There are a few things to beware of though. Check out this post by self-publishing expert Joanna Penn on the IndieReCon blog:

Paying $10,000 to have your book published is a little excessive when you can do it yourself by going to:

If you want your book to be available in paperback as well as Kindle format, check out CreateSpace, Amazon’s print-on-demand service. You can format your book to CreateSpace’s standards and have it available alongside the Kindle version in just 5 days.

You may need help with the formatting of your book – for both Kindle and CreateSpace. There are learning resources available online (tons of books on Amazon and I have a course about how to publish on CreateSpace – you can get it at a discount by going through Author Marketing Club’s link). Or you can find people on Fiverr or Odesk who format books. See the resources section. Please let us know if you find good formatters and we’ll add them to the list.

For marketing, check out the Resources section of this site, which has links to tons of free information. Our book, Make Your Book Work Harder, also has advice

The key is to spend part of your time writing and part of your time marketing. There really is no avoiding it. No publisher services company is going to put as much effort or time into promoting your book as you will yourself.

Set yourself up on social media, become an active member of Goodreads ( – check our my Goodreads course), learn how to make videos to post on YouTube, put out some press releases. That’s all marketing is, getting your name and the links to your books out there.
